Virgins get a worse rap today than in history — pre-christian anyway. Take the word impregnable. Virginity used to be a sacred form of strength — the only way a woman could completely own her body, and not harness it to reproduction — Jean d’Arc, etc. Not that I’m disapproving, just pontificating, as usual.
